Great Barrier Reef Mass Bleaching Event 2022

In 2022, the Great Barrier Reef was hit with the fourth mass bleaching event since 2016.

What’s the most alarming part is that this occurred during a La Niña year, when we normally expect cooler weather.
I teamed up with the Climate Council and the Australian Marine Conservation Society to document the bleaching on Reefs off Townsville. I captured images of severely bleached parts of the reef, and some that looked relatively unscathed.

Reefs can recover when the waters cool, but ultimately, this is yet another wake up call that we need the Australian government to urgently reduce emissions and stop investing in coal and gas to protect this incredible place.
